Buying a juicer

A few things you need to know before buying a juicer.

A good beginner’s model can be found at stores like Target or Wal-Mart. These models start at around $40, have one speed, a smaller motor and smaller hole to insert the vegetables in. The veggie snobs say that you need a separate speed to extract the softer veggies like celery and cucumber because the high speed will heat up the veggie juice and make it acidic. But at least you’re juicing and it is a good start. I used one of these for three years.

Because the motor is small, the hole is small and it limits the amount of veggies that you can put into the juicer at one time. Therefore you have to slice and chop the veggie, which takes more time.

The next level of juicer is the Jack Lalanne’s type juicer that you can find at Costco for around $100. This has a larger motor, a high and a low speed and a larger hole to insert the veggies. With this model, you can put a whole cucumber or carrot in at any speed.

Be sure to clean the juice and pulp really good so that you avoid fruit flies, those pesky suckers. Best to keep veggies in the fridge too. Cold juice tastes a lot better.

Drink your juice quickly after you juice it and it will keep it’s composition better.

Happy juicing!
